Check out 4 coaches of Nghe An football team who are and have been on the national team
(Baonghean.vn) - In the field of Vietnamese football, Nghe An is not only the cradle of many talented players, but also the place that provides many coaches for the national teams. Here are the 4 most notable faces.
1. Former coach Nguyen Thanh Vinh
At the end of 2002, Mr. Vinh "Nghe" was appointed by the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) as acting head coach of Vietnam U23. Under the guidance of former coach Nguyen Thanh Vinh, the U23 team's framework was gradually formed with a series of quality faces such as Nguyen The Anh, Pham Van Quyen, Nguyen Huy Hoang, Le Quoc Vuong, Nguyen Huu Thang, Phan Van Tai Em...

After training trips in Italy and Austria, U23 Vietnam was handed over to former coach Alfred Riedl, while former coach Nguyen Thanh Vinh stepped down to take on the position of assistant. The 1-0 victory over the Korean team in the 2004 Asian Cup qualifiers (taking place on October 19, 2003) and the achievement of winning the Silver Medal at the 22nd SEA Games by coach Alfred Riedl and his team, were greatly contributed by Mr. Vinh "Nghe".
2. Former coach Nguyen Huu Thang
After parting ways with former coach Miura (January 2016), with the support of Mr. Duc, Nguyen Huu Thang agreed to sit in the "hot seat" of both U23 Vietnam and the Vietnam National Team. Unfortunately, the former head coach of SLNA could not meet the expectations of experts and football fans in the country.
At the 2016 AFF Cup, the Vietnamese team under coach Nguyen Huu Thang had to stop right at the semi-finals with a 3-4 defeat to the Indonesian team under former coach Alfred Riedl. One year later, at the 29th SEA Games, it was the U23 team's turn to be eliminated bitterly in the group stage, with a crushing defeat to U23 Thailand (0-3). This was the "last straw" that forced former coach Nguyen Huu Thang to announce his resignation.

At this time, the former SLNA and Vietnam National Team coach is holding the position of Chairman of Ho Chi Minh City Club, the team that won the runner-up position in V.League 2019. With his talent and extensive experience, Chairman Nguyen Huu Thang is gradually building Ho Chi Minh City Club into a formidable force, a worthy opponent of Hanoi Club.
Thanks to his impressive achievements with SLNA's youth teams and Vietnam's U21 team for many years, the Thanh Hoa-born strategist was appointed by VFF as the "captain" of Vietnam's U16 team in the Asian U16 qualifiers and the Mekong Sub-region Football Championship, both taking place in 2013. However, the team led by coach Dinh Van Dung did not achieve the expected results.

In recent times, the former SLNA midfielder has been a regular member of the Vietnam U19, Vietnam U21 and Vietnam U20 teams under coach Hoang Anh Tuan. Don't forget, coach Dinh Van Dung was one of coach Hoang Anh Tuan's assistants at the 2017 U20 World Cup, held in Korea. Currently, Mr. Dung "Thanh Hoa" is the head coach of SLNA U13.
4. Coach Duong Hong Son
Although he is still a very young coach in both age and experience, the former SLNA goalkeeper is proving his talent and "cool hand" in his new position. In addition to the titles at the club level such as winning the 2018 National Second Division Championship (Head Coach of Hanoi Youth) or winning the 2019 National U19 Championship (Head Coach of Hanoi U19), the strategist born in 1982 also helped the Vietnam U21 team win the Thanh Nien Newspaper International U21 Championship 2019, held in Da Nang.![]() |

In addition to the four famous faces mentioned above, in recent years, the coaching staff of the national teams have also included two faces who used to play for the Nghe An team. They are Vo Van Hanh (goalkeeper coach of the Vietnam National Team at the 2016 AFF Cup) and Nguyen The Anh (goalkeeper coach of the U23 Vietnam team at the 30th SEA Games). In the past, Vo Van Hanh and Nguyen The Anh used to play for SLNA as goalkeepers.
