Priority points for university admission will be adjusted down.

In the near future, adjustments to the difference in priority points in university admissions will be included in the revised admission regulations.

After universities announced the admission scores for various majors, many candidates were surprised when this year's admission scores were said to be a record high compared to many years. With such high admission scores this year, some candidates scored over 29 points but still failed to pass the university entrance exam from their first choice.

It is worth mentioning that there are candidates who only scored 25.75 points but were given 3.5 bonus points, making it 29.25 points, and passed the university entrance exam.

Given the above reality, many opinions suggest that the preferential point policy should be changed so that candidates with high scores who do not receive bonus points are not disadvantaged.

Regarding the above proposals, Deputy Minister of Education and Training Bui Van Ga said that the priority in enrollment is to implement the policies of the Party and the State for children of families with meritorious services to the country, children of ethnic minorities, students in remote areas, and areas with many socio-economic difficulties. This priority policy has been applied for many years and needs to be maintained in the coming years.

However, because the structure of the National High School Exam is different from the structure of the entrance exam, the difference in priority between different subjects and regions also needs to be adjusted accordingly.

Previously, the entire exam included differentiated questions for admission purposes. Now, the exam only has 40% differentiated questions, so to ensure fairness for different candidates, the difference in priority points must also be adjusted down.

Deputy Minister Bui Van Ga revealed that the Ministry of Education and Training had a working session with representatives of the Ethnic Committee, the Ethnic Council, the Government Office, relevant ministries, sectors, localities, and schools to consult on appropriate priority scores in admissions. In the near future, these adjustments will be included in the revised admission regulations.

In addition, in the 2017 university entrance exam, public opinion raised questions about low entrance exam scores for teachers. Deputy Minister Bui Van Ga said that in recent years, the Ministry of Education and Training has drastically cut teacher training quotas, stopped training and granting pedagogical certificates for university graduates who want to become high school teachers, stopped distance learning for pedagogical majors, etc.

From 2018 onwards, teacher training targets will be assigned based on local needs and the capacity and quality assurance conditions of each school. On the other hand, the Ministry is re-planning teacher training schools, conducting statistics on teacher needs in all localities to have comprehensive and synchronous solutions to solve the problem of local surplus and shortage of teachers at all levels of education./.
