Canadian scientists have shown that eating less than 3 grams of salt per day not only does not limit cardiovascular problems but on the contrary increases the risk of disease.

According to the NY Times, scientists looked at data and measured blood pressure and urine to estimate the salt consumption of 133,118 volunteers. Among 69,559 people without high blood pressure, eating more than 7 grams of salt daily did not increase the risk of disease or death. In contrast, eating less than 3 grams of salt increased the risk of early death or stroke, heart attack by 26% compared to eating 4-5 grams per day.

For those with high blood pressure, eating more than 7g of salt a day increases the risk of cardiovascular disease by 23%. Eating less than 3g makes the body 34% more likely to have problems than eating 4-5g.

The author of the above work is Andrew Mente, an epidemiologist at McMaster University (Canada), said that eating less salt certainly helps lower blood pressure "but too little is dangerous". It is important to consider health factors other than blood pressure to find a suitable diet.
