Investigation into the death of a person after the Nam Non Hydropower Plant discharged its floodwaters

Found the body of a person swept away by water when Nam Non hydroelectric dam discharged its gates.

(Baonghean.vn) - Two brothers were rowing a boat on the river when Nam Non Hydropower Plant released its floodgates. They were unable to react in time and the boat capsized, causing one person to be swept away and die.

Regarding the incident of a local person dying due to a boat capsize in the area below Nam Non hydropower dam, on the morning of May 24, Mr. Kha Van Ot - Vice Chairman of Tuong Duong District People's Committee said that local authorities at all levels organized to visit and encourage the family. In addition, Nam Non hydropower plant also provided initial support to the victim Vi Van May's family of 40 million VND.

"The local government has directed the relevant agencies to investigate and clarify the cause of the incident. At this point, no official conclusion can be made," Mr. Ot added.

On the morning of May 24, the People's Committee of Tuong Duong district also had an initial report on the incident. According to the report, at about 1:45 p.m. on May 23, 2019, in the area below the Nam Non hydropower dam, about 40 meters from the spillway of the Nam Non hydropower plant, in Xieng Huong village, Xa Luong commune, Tuong Duong district, a boat capsized accident occurred. On the boat were two brothers, Vi Van May and Vi Van Than, who were fishing, causing Vi Van May to be swept away by the water. Vi Van Than was lucky to escape death.

After receiving the information, the leaders of the District Party Committee and the People's Committee of Tuong Duong district promptly arrived at the scene to direct the deployment of search and rescue forces.

At 4:30 p.m. the same day, search and rescue forces recovered the victim's body about 50 meters downstream from the accident site.

Previously, believing that Mr. May's death was due to the Nam Non Hydropower Plant releasing water without notifying the victim as per the previous procedure, leading to the boat capsizing accident, the victim's family surrounded the plant last night, demanding that the plant clarify its responsibilities.

It was not until 2:00 a.m. on May 24, with the intervention of the local authorities, directly directed by Mr. Nguyen Van Hai - Secretary of Tuong Duong District Party Committee, after making a record of the incident between Nam Non Hydropower Plant, the victim's family and the local authorities, that relatives brought May's body home for burial.
