Enterprises carry out social responsibility for sustainable development

(Baonghean.vn) - On April 5, in Ho Chi Minh City, the forum on Implementing the Sustainable Development Goals: How the Business Community Benefits was jointly organized by the Vietnam Chamber of Commerce and Industry (VCCI), the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

Nearly 100 businesses attended. This is an event to support Vietnamese businesses in implementing corporate social responsibility in sustainable production and consumption. The focus of the Agenda is 17 sustainable development goals and 169 related targets to address the most important challenges of our time in terms of economy, society, environment and governance.

The Sustainable Development Goals clearly define partnerships for people, planet, prosperity and peace. The Government is responsible for guiding and formulating a national implementation plan, while preparing an enabling environment and promoting the importance of the program to every citizen.

In addition, the role of enterprises is extremely important, the actions of enterprises are the key to success through responsible business operations, applying new business models, investing in innovation and technology and mutually beneficial business cooperation. Successful implementation of sustainable development goals will strengthen the favorable environment for business and capture markets worldwide.

According to Mr. Nguyen Quang Vinh - Deputy General Secretary of VCCI, representative of the Vietnam Global Compact Network: "The United Nations Global Compact is a practical approach for businesses to realize sustainable development goals. This is a great opportunity, and at the same time, it is our responsibility to contribute. The Vietnam Global Compact Network supports identifying challenges and solutions related to the interaction between businesses and the community, the environment, the Government and consumers, to promote sustainable business development and contribute to the 2030 agenda of sustainable development goals".

The United Nations Global Compact is the largest and most global initiative to engage businesses in sustainable development, adhering to 10 principles in business and supply chain operations. These are: Businesses must support and respect internationally recognized human rights; Commit to not being complicit in human rights abuses; Businesses must support freedom of association and recognize the right to collective bargaining; Eliminate all forms of forced and compulsory labor; Effectively abolish child labor; Eliminate discrimination in employment; Businesses must support preventative measures to address environmental challenges; Implement initiatives to further enhance environmental responsibility; Encourage the development and dissemination of environmentally friendly technology; Businesses must combat corruption in all its forms, including bribery and bribery. This is the foundation for companies when participating in implementing sustainable development goals.

Speaking at the forum, Ms. Pham Chi Lan - Economic expert, former Vice President of VCCI said: The United Nations Sustainable Development Goals for the period 2015 - 2030 are also the things we need to do to achieve the Vietnam 2035 aspiration - towards prosperity, creativity, equality and democracy. The State, businesses and society all have their own responsibilities and interests in implementing those goals and success can only be achieved when we all do our best.
