Thousands of beautiful girls from all over the country gathered at two preliminary locations in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. This is the first battle they must overcome to win the chance to enter the Top 70 semi-finals. The judges evaluated and scored the contestants based on two competitions: bikini performance and interview.

Entering the first round of the bikini competition, the girls not only had to show off their bodies and figures but also had to prove to the judges their qualities through their catwalk steps.

Contestant Hoang Thi Thuy (No. 404) was reminded by judge Huong Giang about not communicating with the judges during her performance. Meanwhile, contestant Trinh Thi Gam (No. 111) has a body and height that do not meet the criteria of a beauty pageant, but still boldly registered to participate in Miss Universe Vietnam.

Although she is a professional model, contestant Mau Thi Thanh Thuy (candidate 242) was still reminded by the judges about her performance. She apologized to the judges and said that this was the first time she performed in the style of a beauty queen. If other contestants only had to try 100%, she had to try even harder.

During the performance, contestant Uong Thi Thanh Mai (SBD 126) accidentally fell but still tried to complete her performance. However, contestant Do Huong Ly (SBD 128) - who performed in the same group as Thanh Mai was reminded for not handling the situation well when seeing her co-performer fall.

After the bikini show, the contestants continued with the interview with the judges. Contestant Hoang Thi Thuy (candidate number 404) was continuously “questioned” by the judges about many issues such as the abuse of folk songs and proverbs, and the success in her modeling career that somewhat hindered and pressured her when participating in Miss Universe Vietnam 2017.

Facing the pressures in life and career, Hoang Thuy burst into tears with emotion when recalling what she had been through. That was the motivation for her to improve herself more and more.

As soon as she entered the interview room, contestant Mau Thi Thanh Thuy (SBD 242) received the notice of her elimination, which left her extremely confused. Mau Thuy repeatedly asked the judges why she was eliminated because without a convincing reason, she would not easily accept being eliminated from the competition. However, this was just a psychological challenge and through that, it partly showed her determination for this competition.

When sharing about her mother who sells crab soup, Mau Thuy burst into tears, but she said she was proud of her mother and wanted to spend more time with her.
