The AP came to its conclusion after counting delegates who had not yet formally pledged their support but had privately told the AP they would support Donald Trump at the convention. The AP listed several such people, including Oklahoma Republican Party Chairwoman Pam Pollard and Colorado Republican Party Chairman Steve House.

The Republican candidate needs to win 1,237 delegates to become the party's representative in the general election in November. According to AP calculations, Mr. Trump has won 1,238 delegates.

Billionaire Donald Trump is the only candidate running for the Republican nomination after his last opponent, Ohio Governor John Kasich, announced his withdrawal on May 3. Previously, Mr. Trump's main rival, Senator Ted Cruz, also dropped out of the race.

Republicans are expected to make their formal choice at their July 18-21 convention in Cleveland.
