Precious rains quench the thirst of summer-autumn rice in Nghe An

(Baonghean.vn) - After days of severe drought, heavy rain has been experienced in many localities in Nghe An province in recent days. Farmers in the localities have been actively going to the fields to focus on caring for and producing summer-autumn rice.

Focus on summer-autumn rice care

After the rain last night, farmers in Dong Van - Thanh Chuong commune went out to the fields to take care of the rice. Although the cracked rice fields had no water, the soil was softer and the rice was greener.

Mr. Nguyen Van Ngu (57 years old) is fertilizing rice in Dong Thuong hamlet. He said that this season his family is growing 7 sao of Khang Dan rice. It has been more than 20 days since the planting, the rice has turned green but there is no water for irrigation, only last night's rain. According to Mr. Ngu, because the rice is "old", the fields do not have water, the soil is just moist enough but must be fertilized in time. On this occasion, he fertilized 15 kg of red NPK fertilizer and 4 kg of urea/sao. "There is no water for irrigation, we just have to wait for rain, just fertilize first and wait for more rain" - Mr. Ngu said.

Like Mr. Ngu, Ms. Tran Thi Huyen (46 years old) in Tien Quanh hamlet was fertilizing the chalk field and shared: “My family has 7 sao of rice fields, but we have been waiting for a long time but there is still no water to fertilize. The Dong Van pumping station cannot pump. Last night, thanks to the heavy rain, although it was not enough compared to the cracked, white fields, it was still precious, the soil was softer, so we could go to the fields to fertilize.” During the recent drought, Dong Van, Dai Dong... were localities with severe water shortages in Thanh Chuong. It did not rain, the Lam River dried up, the pumps could not work, and the rice fields were "thirsty" and withered.

Mr. Le Dinh Thanh - Vice Chairman of Thanh Chuong District People's Committee said: After a long period of drought, the fields were dry and cracked, in the past few days, there has been rain in Thanh Chuong district. Although the rain did not last long and the amount of rain was not large, it has helped some crops, especially rice and industrial crops such as tea, oranges, etc. of Thanh Chuong to initially recover after a long period of drought. In particular, some forest areas have increased humidity, reducing the risk of forest fires due to heat.

In areas such as Thanh Lam, Thanh Giang, etc., the rainfall is relatively high, so people have gone to the fields to take care of the rice so that it can concentrate on tillering. However, in some communes such as Dong Van, Cat Van, etc., the rainfall is insignificant, so the drought continues, making it difficult to take care of the rice to grow and develop.

Up to now, Hung Nguyen district has basically completed the summer-autumn rice planting. In the past time, drought has affected the growth and development of many rice areas. The locality had to organize the source from Lam river to support the communes in the middle of the district but it was very difficult and complicated.

Mr. Le Viet Hung - an officer of the District Agricultural Service Center said: nearly 400 hectares of transplanted rice (concentrated in the communes of Hung Thanh, Chau Nhan, Xuan Lam, Long Xa) are in the final tillering stage; More than 3,700 hectares of direct-sown rice in the main crop have passed the tillering stage and have been pruned and fertilized for the first time. The remaining late summer-autumn area (about 300 hectares) was sown after June 15, now has 2-3 leaves, in recent days due to drought, many areas have experienced dry fields, affecting rice growth and development. The rains of the past few days have significantly overcome the drought situation in the area.

Speed up the production of winter-spring rice

In Tan Ky district, the "golden rains" have helped people in communes without water resources such as Nghia Hanh and Dong Van to go to the fields to sow the winter-spring rice crop.

Ms. Dang Thi Van - Deputy Head of the District Agriculture Department said: Of the 4,500 hectares of rice in the district, only 3,100 hectares have irrigation water, the rest depend entirely on nature. Therefore, people can only produce when it rains. "In some communes, thanks to the rain, people have gone to the fields to prepare the land and plant. Up to now, Tan Ky has planted about 2,800 hectares/Plan of 4,400 hectares of summer-autumn rice; it is expected to complete the production of the crop before July 5," Ms. Dang Thi Van said.

As for the production areas, because they just started planting on June 15, the rice plants have not yet reached the care period; the rains of the past few days have mainly helped the rice plants grow and develop better, especially in the areas where the fields have started to dry out. Currently, people are focusing on building banks in the fields, holding back water to limit loss, and will start taking care of them in about 10 days.

Over the past few days, Nghe An province has had moderate to heavy rain in some localities. According to information from the North Central Hydrometeorological Station, the total rainfall from June 23 to now in some areas is quite high, such as Quy Chau, Quy Hop, Do Luong, Nam Dan... This rain has partly overcome the drought that began to occur recently, farmers in the localities have focused on going to the fields to take care of the summer-autumn rice, continue to plow the land, and produce winter-spring rice.
