Burned down mother's house due to hallucinations after using drugs

(Baonghean.vn) - Due to hallucinations from having just used drugs, Hung (residing in Tan Ky district, Nghe An) used a gas lighter to burn a mattress that was propped up against a house pillar, burning down almost the entire level 4 house of his wife, and some of the property inside the house was damaged.

On the morning of September 24, Tan Ky District People's Court tried the criminal case against Le Manh Hung (born 1979), residing in Block 7, Tan Ky Town, District, for the crime of "property destruction".

According to the indictment, at about 4:00 p.m. on May 5, 2018, after using drugs alone in block 10, Tan Ky town, Hung went to his mother's house, Ms. Nguyen Thi Tu (born 1948), in block 7, Tan Ky town. When he got home, Hung went upstairs to burn incense for his father. After burning incense, Hung took a gas lighter from the altar and went downstairs to take off the pants and shirt he was wearing and threw them on the floor.

Seeing that, Mrs. Tu took Hung's son (born 2012) out of her house. Due to hallucinations from drug use, Hung used a gas lighter to set fire to the mattress that was propped up against the house pillar. The fire from the mattress spread to a pile of old clothes and then to the roof.

Seeing the house on fire, Hung went to the restroom to sit. A while later, some people discovered the house on fire and ran to put out the fire. When the fire was completely extinguished, Mrs. Nguyen Thi Tu's level 4 house had burned down, causing 70% damage and some of the property inside the house was damaged.

Realizing that his behavior was a violation of the law, Le Manh Hung later went to Tan Ky District Police to surrender.

The asset valuation conclusion of the Tan Ky District Asset Valuation Council concluded: The total damage to Ms. Tu's property caused by Hung's destructive behavior was 106,480,000 VND. Ms. Tu did not request compensation.

Previously, Hung had been sentenced to 66 months in prison for theft of property and illegal possession of drugs, and was twice forced to be sent to a reformatory school and an educational facility for his behavior."Theft of property"(His criminal record has been cleared). In 2015, Hung was ordered by the People's Court of Tan Ky district to apply administrative measures and be sent to a compulsory drug rehabilitation facility. (On February 14, 2017, he completed the administrative measures and his criminal record has been cleared.)

At the end of the trial, the jury sentenced Le Manh Hung to 2 years and 6 months in prison.
