Chiều ngày 18/5, U23 Malaysia có buổi tập đầu tiên và cũng là duy nhất tại sân phụ Việt Trì để chuẩn bị cho trận bán kết gặp U23 Việt Nam. Kết thúc buổi tập, U23 Malaysia đã di chuyển sang sân chính Việt Trì để đi bộ, thăm quan địa điểm thi đấu trận bán kết. Sau đó, U23 Malaysia lên xe trở về khách sạn Mường Thanh-Phú Thọ để nghỉ ngơi, ăn cơm tối.

Trên chuyến xe trở về khách sạn của U23 Malaysia không có sự xuất hiện của HLV Brad Maloney. Theo tìm hiểu, nhà cầm quân người Australia đã chủ động đề xuất sẽ cùng một trợ lý người Malaysia đi bộ từ sân Việt Trì trở về khách sạn nơi đóng quân.
