In the first 3 months of 2016, although the quantity of goods such as tin, raw stone, and peanuts through the Port decreased significantly, the output of goods through Cua Lo Port still reached 708,759 tons, reaching 102% of the plan.
According to forecasts from the Customs sector and Nghe Tinh Port Joint Stock Company, in the coming time, some retail and containerized goods that were previously transported by road will now be transferred to waterways, which will also increase the volume of goods passing through the port. Cua Lo Port will have more container ships registered to regularly operate at Cua Lo Port.
Ships importing coal and exporting clinker are expected to increase output through Cua Lo port due to products from Song Lam 1 and Song Lam 2 cement factories. Factories under construction in the area are also increasing output of imported equipment through Cua Lo port and exporting to Laos and China.
Wood chips of NA PP Paper Materials Joint Venture Company Limited and Nghe An Paper Materials Company Limited also increased. In addition, the companies: Yabashi Vietnam Limestone Mining Company, Tin Hoang Minerals, Surint Omya Vietnam, Omya Vietnam Minerals, Van Truong Sinh Production and Trading Enterprise exporting processed stone also increased the output of Cua Lo Port.
Cua Lo Port has now been dredged to a depth of -7.2m, allowing vessels of up to 20,000 tonnes to enter and exit easily; vessels do not have to wait for the tide and larger vessels are expected to visit the port more often. However, the port still faces fierce competition from Nghi Son Port.
