Germany to extend border controls indefinitely in 2016
At the end of the 2016 Christmas and New Year holidays, the flow of people returning to Germany was congested at the borders of the southern and southeastern states of the country due to immigration checks.
Bavarian Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann said the controls could last indefinitely into the new year, as long as the external borders of the Schengen area and other European Union (EU) countries are not protected.

Mr. Herrmann also spoke out to demand that EU countries with external borders of the Schengen area comply with the provisions of this treaty.
The statement is seen as a reference to Slovenia, whose external borders with the Western Balkans have not been well controlled in recent times.
According to Mr. Herrmann, countries like Slovenia that do not comply with the Schengen Agreement should leave this area.
Over the past few months, under pressure from a huge influx of migrants, Germany has introduced visa and document controls at the borders of the two states of Bavaria and Saxony, which border Austria, the Czech Republic and Poland.
