Farming tools of a time to remember
(Baonghean.vn) - Anyone who has gone through the difficult and arduous subsidy period cannot help but be filled with memories of being a farmer. The following farming tools remind us of the past hardships of farmers who toiled day and night to produce rice and potatoes to feed people.
1- The rice threshing shaft

In the past, when there were not many modern rice threshing machines like today, most of the families who worked in rice farming in Nghe An had to use a stone shaft as a rice threshing tool. When not in use, the stone shaft was carefully preserved and stored in the house. When the rice was ready to be harvested, people would take out the stone shaft to assemble, adjust, and clean it to prepare it for use as a rice threshing tool. |
2 - Rice mill

The rice mill is a tool used by farmers to peel the rice grain, separating the chaff from the rice grain. The rice mill is placed on a four-legged stand called the mill foot. The mill is made of a piece of bamboo or wood about a meter long, shaped like the letter T. The end of the T has a hook that is inserted into the ear of the mill on the upper board. The top of the T is tied with a rope to hang from the rafters or pull the house. |
3- Rice mortar

The rice mill only peels the husk to get the rice grains, still with the bran on the outside. To get white, delicious rice, you have to put it in a mortar and pound it, separating the bran from the rice. This process is called pounding rice. Before the 90s, when there were no milling machines, the rice pounding mortar was very popular in every family. |
4 - Rice sieve

“A raincoat is a coat often used to protect against the rain, made from many layers of leaves (palm or palm leaves...), sewn together with crochet thread, calf-length, sleeveless, with a tie around the neck. The raincoat is neat and does not get in the way when working (plowing, harrowing, planting...) and was commonly used in rural Vietnam in the past. In some places, raincoats also have the function of protecting against the sun and wind.” |

Coconut shells are very popular as water scoops. In the past, people did not use plastic as much as they do now. Buying aluminum metal utensils was expensive, so the locals always took advantage of what was available around them to make household utensils. |
