Greece was the main gateway for 1 million refugees and migrants entering Europe last year, sparking the worst migration crisis since World War II.
With the Balkan countries going it alone and unilaterally tightening border controls, at least 30,000 migrants are currently stranded in Greece.
In January, the European Commission (EC) released a report following inspections that found Greece had failed to properly manage the registration and fingerprinting of migrants crossing its borders.
Immediately afterwards, the European Union (EU) issued an ultimatum demanding that Greece remedy this situation, otherwise Athens would face border controls with the remaining countries in the Schengen visa-free area.
