(Baonghean.vn) - During the war, they were the warriors who directly contributed to the victory that "resounded throughout the five continents and shook the world". After peace, they returned to normal life with many hardships and worries, but never forgot the heroic memories of the Dien Bien Phu victory. After 64 years of the Dien Bien Phu victory (May 7, 1954 - May 7, 2018), the veterans in Nghe An who participated in the campaign still remember "56 days and nights of digging mountains and sleeping in tunnels, pouring rain and eating rice balls, blood mixed with mud".

Colonel Nguyen Canh Thin (1927) in Hung Binh ward, Vinh city (Nghe An), a veteran of Regiment 174, Division 316, always "remembers clearly" the battles to destroy the strongholds of hills A1, C1, C2 in the Dien Bien Phu campaign. Returning to normal life, he lived an exemplary life, close to everyone. Photo: Chu Thanh

Despite his old age, Colonel Thin still has the habit of reading newspapers and watching TV every day to update current news with Mr. Nguyen Van Khoa - a comrade who once fought right at Hill A1, Dien Bien Phu in the past. Mr. Thin affirmed his determination when participating in the Dien Bien Phu campaign: "At that time, all of us young men were enthusiastic and volunteered to go to war to claim the country's debt and avenge our family. An entire generation was ready to sacrifice blood and bones for the Fatherland." Photo: Chu Thanh

As for Colonel Nguyen Dong, of the 351st Division, who participated in the Dien Bien Phu campaign from the very first days, the days when the country joyfully celebrated the victory, were the times when he often remembered the old battlefield and his old comrades the most. Photo: Chu Thanh

Thanks to the efforts of many people, in 2004, a liaison committee of Dien Bien Phu soldiers in Vinh city was established to connect and help soldiers who fought in the Dien Bien Phu battlefield. At its peak, the group had 86 members, but now the number is only 68. Photo: Chu Thanh

Every year, on the anniversary of the historic Dien Bien Phu victory, old soldiers meet and cannot help but feel nostalgic and emotional, remembering the fiery times as well as reviewing the glorious feats of arms of the war. Photo: Chu Thanh

Most of the veterans are over 85 years old, but when they meet each other these days, they seem to recall the memories of the once-brave, indomitable young men who fought for every inch of land against the enemy on the fierce battlefield in Dien Bien Phu. Photo: Chu Thanh

With the remaining 68 members of the Dien Bien Phu Soldiers Association in Vinh City, each year that passes, the association may lose many members. However, everyone believes that the will and spirit of the Nghe An soldiers who participated in the Dien Bien Phu campaign will be forever recorded in the heroic pages of the nation's history.
