The United States is the world's largest coffee consumer, second only to the European Union (EU). The latest forecast from the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) predicts that global coffee consumption will jump to 168.1 million bags (each bag weighs 60 kg), an increase of 5.1 million bags in the 2024-2025 crop year.
The US alone will import 22.3 million bags, an increase of 0.8 million bags due to strong demand. The main suppliers to the US include Brazil (32%), Colombia (20%), Vietnam (8%) and Honduras (7%).
According to Vietnam's statistics, in 2024, the US was Vietnam's 5th largest coffee import market, after Germany, Italy, Spain, and Japan, with a 5.7% market share, up 10.2% in value over the same period last year.
USDA also forecasts that Vietnam's coffee output this crop year will recover, contributing to the recovery of global coffee output.
In the domestic market, some coffee growers are showing signs of Tet holiday, not wanting to sell or only selling in moderation because they want to wait until after Tet when prices will increase.
World coffee prices today
Coffee prices on the world market also fluctuate:
Robusta Coffee (London):
March 2025 delivery: Up 43 USD/ton, to 5,049 USD/ton.
Delivery in May 2025: Up 40 USD/ton, to 5,002 USD/ton.
Arabica Coffee (New York):
March 2025 delivery: Up 1.2 cents/lb, to 328.35 cents/lb.
May 2025 delivery: Up 1.45 cents/lb, to 324.6 cents/lb.
According to Comunicaffe, the new year that has just begun looks set to continue to be a challenging one for the coffee market, especially given the current global supply-demand situation.
Coffee prices are expected to remain high due to no prospects of a significant recovery in world coffee production, low inventory levels and stable demand.
In Brazil, arabica coffee production is expected to decline, only partially offset by an expected increase in robusta coffee output.
Therefore, the Brazilian Coffee Exporters Association (Cecafé) believes that the country's coffee exports are unlikely to repeat the record level of 2024, although the export rate will remain high.
The harvest in Vietnam is coming to an end and yields are also expected to be below historical averages.
