In 2024, it seemed that many businesses would benefit from the sudden increase in coffee prices, but the business results of listed companies were not as expected. Many businesses had declining profits, even losses due to high costs.

On February 21, the Vietnam Coffee and Cocoa Association (VICOFA) informed that coffee exports have increased again since after Tet.

Specifically, in the first 15 days of February, Vietnam exported 77,692 tons of green coffee alone, with an export turnover of nearly 418 million USD, up 34% in volume and 133.3% in value over the same period last year.

The main export is still Robusta coffee with 70,533 tons, turnover of over 374.25 million USD, average unit price of 5,307 USD/ton.

Accumulated from the beginning of the year to February 15, businesses have exported 215,260 tons of coffee beans, with export turnover of over 1.11 billion USD, down 23.2% in volume but up 36.1% in value compared to the same period last year thanks to increased coffee prices.

Coffee prices on the world market also fluctuate:

Robusta Coffee (London):

March 2025 delivery: Up 78 USD/ton, to 5,719 USD/ton.

Delivery in May 2025: Up 71 USD/ton, to 5,726 USD/ton.

Arabica Coffee (New York):

March 2025 delivery: Up 2.15 cents/lb, to 392.05 cents/lb.

May 2025 delivery: Up 2.4 cents/lb, to 381.95 cents/lb.

Recent record high prices have caused demand to decline, while there are early signs of a bumper coffee crop in Brazil. Robusta prices could fall at a similar pace.

Coffee prices have fallen sharply due to selling pressure from investment funds and rising coffee inventories. According to data from ICE, Arabica coffee inventories monitored by the exchange have increased by 2.7% in just the last two sessions, from 758,514 bags to 779,063 bags on February 20. Meanwhile, Robusta inventories have also increased from 4,297 lots to 4,347 lots.

According to multiple sources, traders believe that roasters may have accumulated enough coffee at this point, so they have paused buying, after making strong purchases in recent weeks due to no longer expecting prices to fall.
