At the end of last week, coffee prices in the Central Highlands region increased by 1800 to 2200 VND/kg compared to the previous week. After two months of continuous sharp declines, the domestic coffee market is showing positive signs of recovery. Specifically, coffee prices in Dak Nong increased by 2200 VND/kg. In Dak Lak and Gia Lai, prices increased by 2100 and 2200 VND/kg respectively. In Lam Dong, prices increased by 1900 VND/kg compared to the previous week.

However, the fact that domestic coffee prices are higher than world prices is making exports difficult due to price mismatches. This phenomenon has occurred frequently in recent years. This both demonstrates the high quality of Vietnamese coffee and poses a challenge to competitiveness in the context of a difficult global economy where buyers prioritize lower prices.

A notable development this past week was the issue of import tariffs into the US market. The administration of President Donald Trump reached a tariff agreement with Vietnam as follows: a basic tariff of 5-10%, plus an additional 10% tariff, bringing the total tariff to between 15-20%.

Although this is not a low tax rate, it does not have a significant impact on coffee products. If businesses are well-prepared and can prove 100% Vietnamese origin, they can still benefit from a preferential tax rate of only 10%.

World coffee prices today

On the world market, coffee prices last week showed contrasting trends between the two main varieties, robusta and arabica. While robusta prices increased slightly, arabica prices fell sharply.

Specifically, on the London exchange, the price of robusta coffee for September 2025 delivery ended the week at $3677 per ton, an increase of $16 per ton compared to the previous week. The November 2025 contract also increased by $24, reaching $3617 per ton.

Conversely, Arabica coffee prices on the New York exchange fell sharply. The September 2025 contract dropped 4.7% to 289.6 cents/lb, while the November 2025 contract fell 4.5% to 284.15 cents/lb.

The arabica market continues to closely monitor weather conditions in Brazil. Despite being in winter, the risk of frost is not high. Over the next 10 days, weather in Brazil's coffee-growing regions is forecast to remain relatively warm. However, analysts are still closely watching further developments, as this is a crucial stage in the development of the coffee plants for the new crop.

In Indonesia, robusta coffee harvesting is being affected by unfavorable weather. Prolonged heavy rains in many growing regions have reduced bean quality and slowed down harvesting progress, raising concerns about a robusta supply shortage. Many traders say that robusta coffee exports from Indonesia are currently slowing down, adding further upward pressure on prices.

The current supply situation is expected to continue supporting robusta coffee prices in the short term, especially as demand from roasters remains high. Some local reports suggest that Indonesia's coffee production this season may not meet expectations, further increasing concerns about supply shortages.
