Pig farming households and companies in Dong Nai began to restock their pig herds in September and early October to supply the Tet market. However, many households have reduced the number of pigs raised compared to previous years.
Mr. Nguyen Van Tu, a pig farmer in Thong Nhat district, said his farm only raises more than 200 pigs instead of more than 300 pigs like previous years. The reason is that the price of piglets and feed has increased, making him not dare to raise many pigs.
In Trang Bom district, Ms. Tran Thi Huong also raised only over 150 pigs for Tet, down one-third compared to last year. Ms. Huong said that in addition to high costs for breeding and feed, pork prices during Tet often fluctuate erratically, with some years increasing but other years decreasing sharply due to the influx of imported meat.
In addition, the weather at the end of the year is unstable, and diseases are likely to occur in pigs, making her not dare to risk raising more pigs. This is a common situation for many small-scale pig farmers in Dong Nai.
In addition to the reduction in herds of livestock farmers, nearly 1,300 small-scale livestock farms in Dong Nai have had to stop operating due to failure to meet environmental regulations. This has reduced the number of pigs supplied to the Tet market from Dong Nai.
However, the Dong Nai Livestock Association forecasts that the output of pigs supplied for Tet will remain stable, thanks to large companies and farms maintaining or increasing their herds.
Chairman of the Association, Mr. Nguyen Tri Cong, said that the pig herd in Dong Nai currently maintains nearly 2.2 million pigs, ensuring a stable supply for the Tet market.
The price of live pigs ranges from 63,000 to 65,000 VND/kg, helping farmers make a profit. Dong Nai also has about 26 million chickens, enough to supply for Tet.
