Pig prices increase sharply, livestock businesses gradually make profits

In the past 2 months, the price of live pigs in our country has increased sharply again. Data from the Vietnam Commodity Exchange (MXV) shows that the price of live pigs in the North has recorded the best increase of 21% since mid-April. This is followed by the South with an increase of 18.18% and the Central Highlands with an increase of 17.3%. In the early part of June, the price of live pigs has generally fluctuated close to the threshold of 60,000 VND/kg. This is considered the price range where businesses and small-scale farmers begin to make a profit.

The price of live pigs in the North is fluctuating between 59,000 - 62,000 VND/kg with the best prices recorded in Thai Binh, Hung Yen and Vinh Phuc. In the Central Highlands, live pigs are being bought and sold between 56,000 - 59,000 VND/kg, with the common price range in many provinces being 57,000 - 58,000. In the South, live pigs are being traded between 56,000 - 60,000 VND/kg. Ben Tre and Long An are the two localities recording the highest prices.

According to data from the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, the total number of pigs in our country as of the end of May increased by about 2.6% compared to the same period last year. However, many large enterprises said that the actual estimated number is much lower due to disease and low prices, forcing many farmers to "hang up their pigsty".

“Compared to livestock enterprises, small-scale farmers will have more difficulty in restocking due to limited capital. Although pig prices have improved in the second quarter, demand for livestock will take a long time to recover,” said Pham Quang Anh, Director of the Vietnam Commodity Information Center. In addition to the shortage of supply, expectations of improved meat prices on the world market also support the price of pigs in our country.

In China, a spike in African swine fever cases earlier this year prompted the country to ramp up slaughtering in the first quarter. In a recent report, Rabobank predicted that China’s pork production would fall sharply in the second quarter, pushing pork prices back up. China’s pork consumption is also expected to increase slightly year-on-year as consumer demand recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic.
