Tien Giang Provincial People's Committee organized a workshop on "Improving rice processing and export capacity" on October 29 to promote sustainable development of the local rice export industry.
Mr. Nguyen Van Sanh, former Director of the Mekong Delta Development Research Institute, said that Tien Giang has more than 56,000 hectares of rice land, with a planting area of nearly 130,000 hectares per year and an output of about 790,000 tons of rice. He recommended that the province focus on the rice market segment in which it has advantages and improve the production value chain, plan raw material areas and develop large fields. Along with that, the province needs to support businesses and farmers to participate in the program of 1 million hectares of high-quality rice and reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the Mekong Delta by 2030.
In addition, Mr. Sanh proposed that Tien Giang implement market policies and call for investment, combined with science and technology development, innovation in food processing, creating economic development momentum from the rice industry.
Mr. Phan Thanh Son, Vice Chairman of Cai Be District People's Committee, shared that the district has two enterprises specializing in exporting rice to many countries, but the local area of 6,000 hectares of rice is not enough to produce, so it has to buy from other provinces. Ba Dac area supplies more than 4,000 tons of rice every day, and the government always creates favorable conditions for enterprises to trade rice.
The workshop helps agencies, businesses and farmers in Tien Giang work together to overcome difficulties and find solutions to improve quality, expand exports and increase value for the local rice industry.
