The goal is to apply science and technology to intensive farming to achieve a harvest of over 129,000 tons of commercial rice.
To achieve this goal, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang has developed a reasonable, concentrated and synchronous planting schedule. The planting schedule is adjusted so that the rice harvest is completed before the dry season and saltwater intrusion occurs. At the same time, solutions to improve the quality of exported rice are recommended, including the use of fragrant and high-quality rice varieties such as VD 20, OM 6976, OM 7347, Nang Hoa 9, OM 5451, which are drought and salt tolerant.
In particular, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Tien Giang encourages farmers to use rice varieties that are linked with traders or businesses to ensure favorable output and reasonable prices. In addition, training programs on the application of science and technology, especially the application of IPM methods and measures to reduce the use of chemical fertilizers, have been organized for farmers to improve productivity and protect the environment.
Farmers are also advised to use the row seeding tool or the 3-in-1 rice transplanter to sow sparsely, with a sowing density of 80 to 100 kg of seeds/ha. Using certified rice seeds helps save seeds and limit pests and diseases, while applying balanced fertilizers to improve rice quality. In addition, Tien Giang province promotes mechanization of production stages, from land preparation, sowing to harvesting and post-harvest processing, helping to reduce losses during the production process.
The Tien Giang Department of Agriculture and Rural Development also directed localities in the Go Cong sweetening area to guide farmers in applying the straw management process towards circular agriculture. The utilization and reuse of straw helps reduce emissions and protect the environment.
In addition, to ensure irrigation water for the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, Tien Giang Irrigation Works Exploitation One Member Co., Ltd. will strengthen inspection and repair of saltwater prevention dams, strengthen the dyke system and improve the water environment. Localities such as Go Cong Dong, Go Cong Tay and Go Cong city will also carry out internal irrigation and dredging of canals to facilitate farmers in rice production.
To sustainably develop rice cultivation, Tien Giang province is implementing the Project “Sustainably developing one million hectares of high-quality and low-emission rice cultivation associated with green growth in the Mekong Delta by 2030”. This project will be implemented in key districts, towns and cities such as Cai Be, Cai Lay, Tan Phuoc, Go Cong Dong, Go Cong Tay, Cai Lay town and Go Cong city, with the goal of increasing farmers’ income and reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Go Cong Tay district, Ms. Le Thi Thanh Minh, said that in the 2024-2025 Winter-Spring crop, the locality plans to sow over 7,600 hectares of rice and participate in the High-Quality Rice Development Project with a scale of 7,254 hectares. Go Cong Tay will invest about 95.8 billion VND to support transport infrastructure, irrigation and utilities serving rice production.
