Rice prices today, January 9, 2025: Rice prices increase, paddy prices decrease.

Domestic rice prices

Today, January 9th, rice prices in the Mekong Delta region showed mixed trends, with some rice varieties continuing their downward trend compared to yesterday.

Specifically, regarding rice, according to updates from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of An Giang province, the price of IR 504 raw rice has increased by 150 VND/kg, fluctuating between 7,650 and 7,750 VND/kg; while the price of IR 504 finished rice has decreased by 100 VND/kg, fluctuating between 9,800 and 10,000 VND/kg.

Observations in various localities today indicate low rice supply and slow transactions. In Lap Vo - Vam Cong (Dong Thap), rice is arriving sporadically, warehouses are buying little, and prices have increased slightly compared to yesterday. In Sa Dec (Dong Thap), rice is arriving sporadically, and prices of all types of rice have edged up slightly again.

At Sa Dec market (Dong Thap province), the supply of rice is low, prices of all types of rice have increased slightly, and warehouses are buying sporadically. At An Cu (Cai Be district, Tien Giang province), the supply is slow, there are few buyers, and prices of all types of rice have increased slightly.

At retail markets, rice prices remained stable compared to yesterday. Regular rice fluctuated between 16,000 and 17,000 VND/kg. Currently, Nang Nhen rice has the highest listed price at 28,000 VND/kg; fragrant rice is offered at a higher price ranging from 20,000 to 22,000 VND/kg; Jasmine rice at 18,000 to 20,000 VND/kg; Nang Hoa rice at 21,500 VND/kg; long-grain Thai fragrant rice at 20,000 to 22,000 VND/kg; Huong Lai rice at 22,000 VND/kg; common white rice at 17,500 VND/kg; Taiwanese fragrant rice at 21,000 VND/kg; regular Soc rice at 18,500 VND/kg; Soc Thai rice at 21,000 VND/kg; and Japanese rice at 22,500 VND/kg.

Regarding rice, the current prices are as follows: IR 50404 (fresh) rice decreased by 100 VND, fluctuating between 7,200 and 7,300 VND/kg; OM 5451 rice decreased by 200 VND, fluctuating between 7,600 and 7,800 VND/kg; OM 18 (fresh) rice decreased by 200 VND, fluctuating between 7,800 and 8,000 VND/kg; Dai Thom 8 (fresh) rice decreased by 200 VND, fluctuating between 7,800 and 8,000 VND/kg; OM 380 rice is at 6,600 - 6,700 VND/kg; Nang Hoa 9 rice is at 9,200 VND/kg; and Nhat rice is at 7,800 - 8,000 VND/kg.

Observations in many localities today indicate slow trading of newly harvested rice due to the continuous fluctuations in rice prices. In An Giang, farmers are offering early winter-spring rice for sale sporadically in Tri Ton, but many traders are still hesitant to buy new rice.

In Bac Lieu, demand has improved, and prices remained relatively stable this morning. In Soc Trang, although rice quality is good, demand has increased slightly from yesterday afternoon until now. In Dong Thap, farmers are offering lower prices, but there are few buyers.

The glutinous rice market today shows no new fluctuations. Currently, the price of fresh Long An glutinous rice remains at 7,800 - 8,000 VND/kg; the price of 3-month dried Long An glutinous rice remains at 9,800 - 10,000 VND/kg.

Prices for various by-products remained stable today, fluctuating between 5,950 and 7,400 VND/kg. Currently, the price of fragrant broken rice is at 7,200 - 7,400 VND/kg; the price of dry rice bran fluctuates between 5,950 and 6,050 VND/kg.

Export rice prices

On the export market, Vietnam's rice export prices today decreased slightly compared to the beginning of the week. According to the Vietnam Food Association (VFA), the current price of 5% broken rice is 460 USD/ton; 25% broken rice is 432 USD/ton; and 100% broken rice is 327 USD/ton.

In Thailand, the export price of 5% broken rice also decreased slightly by $2/ton, to $492/ton – still the highest price among the top four rice exporting countries.

In Pakistan, the price of 5% broken rice remained at $449/ton. Accordingly, parboiled 5% broken rice and white rice from India remained at $440/ton and $447/ton respectively.

According to forecasts from reputable organizations such as the US Department of Agriculture, global rice demand will remain high in 2025, especially in countries like the Philippines, where rice is always a vital part of the daily diet. Therefore, businesses in the rice industry need to remain calm and avoid rushing to lower prices to compete. A price war can lead to negative consequences, not only reducing profits but also impacting the sustainable development of the entire industry. Instead of solely competing on price, businesses can seek other solutions to enhance product value, improve quality, and optimize production processes to increase productivity and efficiency.

Currently, Vietnam is about to enter the winter-spring crop season, and businesses need significant financial resources to purchase rice from farmers. To halt the current price decline and secure a long-term supply for export needs, policies supporting businesses with capital and interest rates are necessary.
