Domestic pepper prices are on an upward trend. From VND142,000 to VND143,000 per kg on August 20, prices have remained at VND150,000 to VND153,000 per kg in early September.
According to the Vietnam Pepper Association (VPSA), the reason for the increase in pepper prices is that the harvest season (from May) has ended, and there is not much supply left from households. Meanwhile, businesses still need to buy goods to fulfill signed export orders.
In addition, the US's imposition of high taxes of up to 40% on transit goods has caused businesses to limit imports of raw materials, causing further pressure on prices.
Regarding exports, the turnover in the first 8 months of 2025 exceeded 1 billion USD, the highest in the past 7 years. In August alone, the country exported 166,510 tons, earning more than 1.1 billion USD. Although output decreased by 9.4% compared to the same period, turnover increased by 28% thanks to high selling prices.
The US remained the largest market, accounting for 21.4% of total turnover with 35,697 tonnes, despite a sharp decline in output of 31%. In contrast, the Chinese market grew by an impressive 58%, reaching 13,282 tonnes. Markets such as the UAE and India also saw increases of 9.7% and 13.7%, respectively.
It is forecasted that from now until the end of 2025, pepper prices are unlikely to fall sharply. Strong import demand from China and India will continue to support prices to remain high. However, the decrease in export volume is a challenge, requiring the pepper industry to have a strategy to stabilize supply and expand markets for sustainable development.
