The pepper market is currently under downward pressure due to increased supply from the new harvest, while international demand has yet to show signs of a strong recovery. However, farmers and distributors continue to hold onto their stocks instead of selling, causing trading volumes to drop significantly.
Despite the more abundant supply, global production is forecast to fall to 434,000 tonnes in 2025, which will help limit the sharp decline in pepper prices in the coming time.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, in February 2025, Vietnam exported 28,000 tons of pepper, earning 188.7 million USD. Compared to the same period in 2024, the export volume decreased by 9.4%, but the value increased by nearly 52%. The main reason is that pepper prices have remained high since the beginning of the season.
High pepper prices are motivating farmers to invest more in cultivation, increasing productivity per hectare in the coming years. However, the development of new growing areas takes time to achieve stable productivity, so output in the short term is unlikely to recover strongly.
World pepper price today
In the world market, based on quotes from export enterprises and export prices in countries, the International Pepper Association (IPC) updated the prices of pepper of all types traded in the international market on March 12 (local time) as follows:
Indonesian Lampung black pepper prices decreased slightly compared to yesterday at USD 7,264/ton (down 0.63%). Similarly, Muntok white pepper prices decreased slightly compared to yesterday at USD 10,251/ton (down 0.63%).
Brazilian black pepper ASTA 570 price increased slightly compared to yesterday at 6,900 USD/ton (up 0.73%).
Malaysia’s ASTA black pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $9,800/ton. Meanwhile, the country’s ASTA white pepper price also remained unchanged from yesterday at $12,300/ton.
Prices of all types of pepper in Vietnam are stable compared to yesterday. Of which, the price of Vietnamese black pepper 500 gr/l is 7,000 USD/ton; 550 gr/l is 7,200 USD/ton.
Similarly, Vietnam's white pepper price remained unchanged from yesterday at $10,000/ton.
According to data from IPC, world pepper output in 2024 decreased by about 4% compared to 2023, equivalent to 22,000 tons, down to 558,000 tons. The main reason comes from the decrease in output in two major producing countries, Vietnam and Brazil.
Brazil is the hardest hit, with output falling by about 29% (equivalent to 28,000 tons), from 98,000 tons in 2023 to 70,000 tons in 2024. Prolonged drought due to climate change has depleted irrigation water sources, severely impacting the country's pepper output.
Currently, pepper inventories in Vietnam and the world are at very low levels. Experts predict that in 2025, pepper prices will continue to remain high and tend to increase gradually.
