Statistics show fluctuations in global pepper exports. Vietnam and Brazil, the two leading exporters, are witnessing a decline. In contrast, Indonesia and India have recorded impressive growth, with double-digit increases.
Pepper-producing countries such as Brazil and Vietnam, along with smaller producers such as Indonesia, India, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka, have been affected by El Nino. The weather phenomenon has caused drought, reducing pepper supplies. Experts predict that the supply shortfall relative to demand may continue for the time being until the lean season.
Domestically, dealers and producers are not actively selling, instead holding onto inventories, not worried about falling prices. The market has recently become quiet, with buyers not keen on pepper and suppliers also cautious in distributing raw materials.
World pepper price today
Update on world pepper prices from the International Pepper Community (IPC), at the end of the most recent trading session, IPC listed the price of Indonesian Lampung black pepper at 6,917 USD/ton (down 10.34%), and the price of Muntok white pepper at 9,397 USD/ton (up 0.99%).
The price of Brazilian ASTA 570 black pepper was at USD 6,900/ton. The price of Malaysian ASTA black pepper remained stable at USD 8,800/ton; the price of this country's ASTA white pepper reached USD 11,200/ton.
Vietnamese black pepper prices today are stable at a high level, trading at 6,800 USD/ton for 500 g/l; 550 g/l at 7,100 USD/ton; white pepper prices at 10,150 USD/ton.
IPC has significantly reduced black pepper prices while increasing Indonesian white pepper prices. This reflects the difference between the two peppers, with white pepper prices increasing and black pepper prices decreasing, possibly due to changes in global supply and demand and consumption trends.
China has increased white pepper imports after Typhoon Yagi caused severe damage to Hainan Island, reducing domestic white pepper output. This has led to a difficult forecast for white pepper supply in the fourth quarter and for the Lunar New Year holiday.
In the first 7 months of 2024, Indonesia saw strong growth in pepper exports, with volume increasing by 55.6% and value increasing by 59.6%. However, the harvest season is expected to start later in August, and production is not as optimistic as expected. Indonesia exports mainly to China, Vietnam, the US and India.
