Mr. Nguyen Phi Hung, a pepper farmer in Dak Nong, shared that the current pepper price is only for reference. In fact, agents often buy at a fairly wide price range. Farmers can get extra if the pepper is dried and has few broken seeds. A month ago, his family sold pepper at a reference price of VND160,000/kg but in reality received up to VND168,000/kg.
Mr. Hung said that pepper prices are directly affected by the world market, so it is difficult to predict. Farmers only know how to take care of their pepper gardens to keep them healthy, while profits depend on market fluctuations.
In a meeting with the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment, Mr. Phung Van Sam - Chairman of Hanfimex, representative of the Vietnam Pepper and Spice Association (VPSA) - said that the Chairman of VPSA is flying to the US to coordinate with the American Spice Trade Association (ASTA) to resolve difficulties related to reciprocal taxes.
Mr. Sam emphasized that the US is the largest export market, accounting for about 30% of Vietnam's pepper and spice market share. Immediately after the US President's announcement of the new tax policy, both exporters and buyers were surprised and worried. Many export contracts to the US were postponed or canceled.
Import partners in the US are very concerned about the negative impacts of the new tax rate. Meanwhile, Brazil - a direct competitor of Vietnam - only pays a tax of 10%, while Vietnam faces a tax rate of up to 46%.
According to Mr. Sam, the current situation not only affects export enterprises and processing factories, but also creates great pressure on pepper farmers in the Central Highlands, the Southeast and many other key growing regions. Many farmers have even called him to ask whether they should continue to expand the pepper growing area, but he has not been able to give a clear answer.
