Gold prices held steady around the $2,500/ounce mark as investors awaited inflation reports from the US to gauge the likelihood and extent of interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve (Fed).
The CME FedWatch tool shows there is a 73% chance the Fed will cut rates by 0.25% at next week's meeting, while there is a 27% chance of a deeper cut of 0.50%.
Peter A. Grant of Zaner Metals believes the market is expecting the Fed to opt for a modest 0.25% rate cut, a view he has maintained previously. Lower interest rates could reduce the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding gold.
Investors are keeping an eye on US consumer price index (CPI) data for August due on September 11 and producer price index (PPI) on September 12.
Carlo Alberto De Casa of Kinesis Money said that if inflation figures come in lower than expected and the chances of a 0.50% rate cut increase, gold prices could rise to new highs. But even with a 0.25% rate cut, gold prices will not fall much because the Fed is expected to cut rates.
The New York Fed's report said the American public's view on inflation did not change much over the past month.
Gold Price Forecast
Expert Truong Vy Tuan from Giavang.net predicts that the price of gold bars may decrease slightly this week. This decrease is not a cause for concern and may be an opportunity for investors to buy. The price of gold is stable, reducing speculative activities.
In the context of unstable stock market and real estate investment requiring large capital, gold becomes more attractive. The stability of gold price makes many investors consider investing in gold, enhancing its position in the investment portfolio.
The gap between gold bar and gold ring prices is at a suitable level, helping the State Bank manage the market flexibly. The gold ring market remains at a high price, with the difference between buying and selling prices of over VND1 million/tael, showing that investment demand for gold remains strong.
