Oil prices today September 16: World oil prices on September 15 increased as Russia-Ukraine tensions escalated and the US left open the possibility of imposing additional sanctions on Russia.

World oil prices today

As of 4:00 a.m. on September 16, Brent crude futures rose 0.6% to $67.39 a barrel, while US WTI crude rose 0.8% to $63.21 a barrel. Oil prices are currently fluctuating in the range of $65-70 a barrel, mainly due to concerns about supply disruption risks.

Both crude futures had risen more than 1% this week on the back of a series of attacks on Russian energy infrastructure. JPMorgan analysts said the attacks could add further upward pressure on global oil prices if the trend of targeting oil export facilities continues.

Oil prices edged up slightly in the trading session after the market reacted to a series of Ukrainian drone attacks on Russian refineries, while US President Donald Trump pressured NATO countries to stop buying oil from Russia.

Ukraine reportedly deployed more than 360 drones overnight, briefly setting fire to the Kirishi oil refinery in northwestern Russia, which processes about 355,000 barrels of oil per day, or 6.4% of Russia’s crude oil output.

In addition, Russia's largest oil export port, Primorsk, with a capacity of about 1 million barrels per day, is also on the target list. Last week, oil prices rose more than 1% thanks to the increased attacks on Russian oil infrastructure.

President Trump said the US was ready to impose more energy sanctions on Russia, but only if all NATO countries agreed to stop buying Russian oil. This pressure is expected to make it more difficult for Russia to maintain its oil revenue.

In addition to geopolitical tensions, oil prices also received support from increased refining demand in China and falling US crude inventories. However, weak economic data from China has been a drag on prices, preventing them from breaking out strongly.

The market is also awaiting the interest rate decision from the US Federal Reserve (Fed) on September 16-17. If monetary policy is loosened, borrowing costs will decrease, fuel demand may be boosted.

Last week, reports showed that US job growth slowed while inflation climbed. These factors raised concerns about the economic outlook of the world's largest oil consumer, thereby directly affecting short-term oil price movements.
