Before the National High School Graduation Exam, in addition to the goal of improving scores for students with good academic performance, many schools also pay attention to tutoring weak students to prevent failure.

"Going up the mountain" to support students in mountainous areas

In early June, right after the end of the school year, a group of 7 teachers from Nguyen Xuan On High School (Dien Chau) had a special trip to visit students at Muong Qua High School (Con Cuong).

“We only have 2 days at school but the task is not easy,” said teacher Dao Xuan Tan, a Geography teacher and Chairman of the Trade Union of Nguyen Xuan On High School.

According to Mr. Tan, the teachers participating in this special trip are all reviewing for 12th grade students. Therefore, when coming to Muong Qua High School, they will directly teach and tutor the final year students who are reviewing to prepare for the 2024 High School Graduation Exam.

"The time was very short so we couldn't teach the entire program. Therefore, before joining this class, all teachers connected with teachers at the local school to learn more about the students.

On that basis, we will teach the most basic knowledge, guide students on how to do the exercises effectively. In addition, we will also encourage and motivate students to try their best and finish smoothly this school year. Personally, I am a Geography teacher, in the tutoring sessions I will focus on questions using the Geography Atlas or charts. The purpose is for students to have a method to look at it to be able to solve the exercises and answer the questions," Mr. Dao Xuan Tan shared.

When it was time for Ms. Pham Thi Thu Dung, a Civics teacher, to teach, it was easy to see the students’ enthusiasm for this interesting lesson. At the beginning of the class, Ms. Dung spent a lot of time encouraging the students and motivating them to try their best. The students themselves seemed to be motivated when they received compliments from the teacher.

Perhaps you think that because you only study in a mountainous school, it is difficult to keep up with your friends in the lowlands. But in fact, before coming here, I told my students to go and see how the Muong Qua students study to get such high scores in the Civic Education mock test.

I think you have tried very hard. If any of you have not achieved high scores, please continue to strive and do not lose your chance.

After more than 2 years of interruption due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this is the second school year that teachers from Nguyen Xuan On High School have been assigned to support Muong Qua students in reviewing for exams.

This activity is part of the program “rooms help rooms, schools help schools”. Muong Qua is the school that Nguyen Xuan On High School received support from.

In addition to providing facilities and teaching equipment for schools and students, the two schools also pay special attention to enhancing professional support, such as supporting the training of excellent students, sharing subject plans, lesson plans of the 2018 General Education Program, graduation exam review plans, graduation exam review lesson plans, etc.

In particular, support for extra tutoring for 12th grade students has been strengthened as this year all schools in the province work together to ensure the quality of education and the school's mission, which is to achieve the output as committed to the department, parents and students.

Mr. Tran Cao The - Math teacher, Head of Math - IT Group at Muong Qua High School shared: We really appreciate the efforts of our colleagues. In fact, although the knowledge is the same, each teacher will have a different way of teaching and imparting. Therefore, with the support of teachers from other schools, we can learn more about our subject. Meanwhile, students will also learn many new ways of doing exercises. In addition, new teachers and new teaching methods also create more excitement for students when doing exercises.

Schools do not close in the middle of summer

Loc Tuan Khang is one of the few students of Tuong Duong 2 High School who registered to take the exam both for high school graduation and for university admission.

Living in Yen Thang commune, more than 15 km from school, Tuan Khang still goes to school every day to review for exams. At noon, he stays in class to make instant noodles to eat so he can continue studying in the afternoon.

Tuan Khang shared: “I registered for the first choice of admission to the Geography Pedagogy major at Vinh University. This is one of the majors with a large number of students applying, so there are not many opportunities. Therefore, in the final days, I am trying to make the most of my time to review, consolidate my knowledge, and improve my test-taking skills”…

Tuong Duong 2 High School is one of the mountainous schools, located in a difficult area of Nghe An province. Most of the students at the school still have poor learning conditions, and there are not many students with self-awareness like Tuan Khang. Currently, most of the students at the school live far from their families, many of them rent a room for the entire 3 years of high school to go to school. Having to live independently without relatives around makes them neglectful and unable to focus on their studies.

Speaking more about this, teacher Nguyen Dinh Tu - Math teacher said: The entrance fee at our school is very low, so it is very difficult for students to prepare for the graduation exam. In addition to supplementing knowledge, we also have to train students in test-taking skills. Many students still do not have computers, so studying is very difficult.

To enhance students' review, Tuong Duong 2 High School has now divided students into streams, on that basis arranging teaching for each group.

In addition to general education, the school has also strengthened measures to prevent failure for average and weak students. For over a month now, evening classes have been opened regularly to provide remedial classes for students.

Even though the teachers were on summer vacation, they still stayed to volunteer to teach the students for free. In particular, knowing the difficult circumstances of the students, many teachers also stood up to support students with computers, helping them have the means to study.

Never before have free tutoring classes for 12th graders been organized as simultaneously as this school year and have been deployed to many schools, from the highlands to the lowlands. The classes are not only held during the day, at the end of school hours, but also last into the night and continuously, even on holidays.

At Dang Thai Mai High School (Thanh Chuong), teacher Le Van Thanh - the school's principal shared: Previously, tutoring classes were usually held at the end of the second semester. However, this school year, the school moved them up earlier, right after completing the first semester quality survey for grade 12.

According to the school principal, 2024 is the last year that 12th graders will take the high school graduation exam according to the 2006 General Education Program. From 2025, the exam will certainly have many changes in methods and knowledge content corresponding to the 2018 General Education Program. Therefore, if students fail, they will easily be "left behind". Therefore, in the teaching and exam review plan, the school board has launched a free tutoring program for average and weak students by June 25.

In order to promptly encourage teachers and students, in early June, a delegation from the Department of Education and Training visited all high schools in 6 mountainous districts to encourage, visit and give boxes of nutritional milk to support students who are reviewing.

We are very impressed with the efforts of the schools, the sacrifices of the teachers and the efforts of the students.

Therefore, I believe that this exam season, schools will successfully finish, helping students have more opportunities to apply to universities, colleges and go further in their future career.
