Killing someone by hitting a motorbike key on the head

On October 24, the People's Court of Quang Tri province opened the first instance trial of Phan Hien (27 years old) for murder.

According to the accusation, in October 2015, Hien went to buy clothes at a store in Quang Tri town and thought that the male customer Le Thanh Luong (28 years old) was looking at him. Hien raised his voice and a fight broke out between the two men. Mr. Luong died from a punctured skull.

In court, Hien testified that Luong slapped him twice on the cheek, which led to him using a motorbike key to hit him hard on the temple. The court held that because the store owner did not observe the incident, there were no witnesses, and the victim was already dead, Hien's statement about who was at fault first was not considered.

Assessing Hien's sincere confession, surrender, family contributions to the revolution and early compensation for damages, the panel sentenced the defendant to 20 years in prison for murder; ordered to compensate more than 266 million VND to the victim's family.
