At the event announcing the fourth quarter of 2015 sales, Google CEO Sundar Pichai officially announced that the Gmail email service had just reached 1 billion active user accounts.

The number 1 billion is the number of user accounts currently using the Gmail service to send and receive emails, not counting inactive accounts and occasional users (ie those who have a Gmail account but rarely use it).

As of now, Gmail is the 7th Google service to reach 1 billion users. Previously, Google's search services, Chrome browser, Android operating system, Google Play service, Google Maps and YouTube also reached 1 billion users.

Currently, 1/7 of the world's population uses Gmail service.

It is known that Gmail was chosen by Google as one of the services that applied artificial intelligence technology (AI technology) to help simplify all user tasks. According to Pichai's revelation, the smart response function on Gmail was developed based on AI technology.

Previously, Google’s Inbox email browsing tool also used AI algorithms to intelligently reply to emails with unique words that the application learned from user habits. According to Google, 10% of all mobile email replies are currently using this smart method.

Gmail service is currently available for free at gmail.com and has apps for iOS and Android mobile devices.
