RT news agency reported that the two leaders had a short conversation, shook hands and confirmed an official meeting - taking place on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Hamburg, Germany - in a few hours.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump announced the meeting on Twitter, while President Putin's spokesman also confirmed this.

"They shook hands and announced that they would soon hold a private meeting," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

The meeting will take place at 3:45 p.m. local time (9:45 a.m. Washington time). It is expected to last half an hour.

This will be the first face-to-face meeting between the two leaders, as Congress in Washington is pressing Mr Trump to impose new sanctions on Russia, and to deal with Mr Putin over allegations of Russian cyber attacks on the US election.
