The longest road tunnel in Southeast Asia has some small cracks running horizontally and vertically. The management unit said the cracks do not affect the safety of the project.

In early August, many vehicle owners traveling through the Hai Van Tunnel were concerned when they discovered vertical and horizontal cracks on both sides of the tunnel, starting from the tunnel entrance. In response to the incident, the unitThe authorities have isolated the area to monitor and find solutions to fix and repair it.

According to Mr. Nguyen Tan Dong, Deputy General Director of Deo Ca Joint Stock Company (the management unit of Hai Van Tunnel), the company has invited independent consultants from Germany to survey, monitor, and evaluate the tunnel shell structure using laser scanning method, detecting small cracks from 0.2mm, and at the same time testing the quality of materials and measuring vibrations.

According to the tunnel management agency, in August, the consulting unit will report the full results of the inspection, the cause and the treatment plan. If the Ministry of Transport approves, the unit will repair according to the approved plan.

Deputy Minister of Transport Le Dinh Tho also said that preliminary results show that the cracks do not affect the exploitation of the Hai Van tunnel. However, the Ministry requested an independent consultant to assess the specific cause in order to have a long-term solution. This is very important because a second Hai Van tunnel will be opened soon.

Since June 2005, the Hai Van road tunnel connecting Da Nang and Thua Thien - Hue was inaugurated after 5 years of construction.investment capital of more than 3,400 billion VND from Japanese ODA source. The longest tunnel in Southeast Asia consists of a main tunnel of nearly 6.3 km, an escape tunnel running parallel to the main tunnel, a ventilation tunnel and 15 horizontal tunnels for escape.
