A 43-year-old man who had recently returned from Brazil was diagnosed with the virus after developing symptoms of fever, muscle pain and rash, according to a statement from the Korea Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Currently, the Zika virus has become a global pandemic, spreading to more than 40 countries and breaking out starting in Latin America and the Caribbean.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO) in February 2016, the Zika virus is a global emergency because it directly affects newborns with abnormally small heads, called microcephaly. The disease also increases the risk of a rare neurological syndrome called Guillain-Barré syndrome, which can cause paralysis in patients and lead to death.
