Tens of thousands of people were tricked into winning Mercedes cars on Facebook.

March 6, 2016 08:26

More than 50,000 users, most of them from Vietnam, shared the photo from an unknown page in the hope of winning two Mercedes-Benz E Class cars.

According to the fanpage named Mercedes-Benz 2016, they will give away 2 E Class 2016 cars. The user's job is to click the Like button on this page, comment on their favorite color and share the picture on the wall. This page also said that they will randomly draw and give away the gifts on March 8. Currently, the price of a Mercedes-Benz E Class is from 2 to 2.8 billion VND.

There have been 50,000 likes on this fanpage and more than 55,000 people have shared the photo on their personal pages in hopes of winning the car.

Mercedes-Benz's Social Media department said that this was not their program. A Mercedes-Benz representative warned that there were many pages on Facebook announcing free cars, but "we recommend that users be cautious when sharing personal information on online channels."

According to Facebook, this fanpage was created on February 28. The above photo of the prize-winning scam was the first content posted at noon on March 5.

According to a social media expert in Ho Chi Minh City, this form of like-baiting is quite popular on Facebook. Initially, the page owner will create content offering free gifts, requiring users to like their page. When there are a large number of "likes", the above posts can be deleted to turn into a "clean" fanpage, serving other purposes.

"It is very difficult to get a Facebook page to have tens of thousands of likes in a short time, or it costs a lot of money because the world's largest social network has changed its mechanism compared to before. Therefore, scamming to get likes is the fastest way to get users," he said.

In addition to the Mercedes-Benz scam photo, another fanpage is also announcing a giveaway for iPhone 6S users. The "winning" mechanism is similar, where users have to like the fanpage, comment on the iPhone color and share it on their wall. This content currently has nearly 30,000 shares, most of which are also from accounts in Vietnam. According to the above expert, this is also a scam page and users should be careful when sharing.
