In the summer of 2015, a general agreement was signed on the construction of infrastructure in the area of the state border along the Latvian-Russian border. The construction project covers the entire 283.6 km Latvian-Russian border. The construction project includes wooden walkways, patrol posts, water culverts, and pedestrian paths. In some parts of the border, the height of the fence with barbed wire reaches 2.7 meters.
"The total cost of construction is 21,168 million euros. As of December 31, 2018, the length of the installed border was 207 km, and the initial length of the fence was 93 km. This section of the fence has now been completed. It is planned that the equipment of the border area with Russia will be completed by 2020," the statement said.
Latvia's border with Russia is 283.6 km long. There are ten National Border Guard units on the border, each serving an area of 22 to 40 km and with a staff of 27 to 53 personnel.
