Millions of people took to the streets around the world to protest against new US President Donald Trump over the weekend.

The BBC reported that the number of protesters was much larger than expected. There were more than 600 marches worldwide. The main purpose was to celebrate women's rights - a topic that activists believe is under threat under President Trump.

The largest march in the United States took place in Washington, D.C., with city officials estimating more than 500,000 people taking part, far more than the 200,000 people organizers of the Women's March had expected.

Meanwhile, Trump spent his first full day in office visiting CIA headquarters. The commander-in-chief declared his support for CIA employees “1,000 percent” and denounced the media for its dishonest reporting on the crowd size at his inauguration. Trump made no mention of the January 21 protests.

Singer Madonna also appeared, repeating in a speech broadcast live by many American television stations: "Yes. I was offended. Yes. I thought a lot about blowing up the White House."

Large marches also took place across the United States, notably in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, Boston and Miami.

Outside the US, organizers of a women's rights march in London, England, said between 80,000 and 100,000 people took part. Belfast, Cardiff, Edinburgh, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester and Bristol also saw similar protests.

Previously, anti-Trump protests took place in Australia, New Zealand and several Asian cities.
