According to these unnamed officials, senior security advisers of the Trump administration made a series of proposals during a lunch at the White House on September 3, just hours after North Korea tested a hydrogen bomb. The proposals included a diplomatic and military package such as cyber attacks, increased surveillance and intelligence activities... for Pyongyang.
While the day's discussion included details of US military capabilities, the tactical focus remained on diplomacy with China and Washington's allies.
“We discussed all sorts of crazy things that have never been done,” one official said. But the use of nuclear weapons appeared to be ruled out. One of the officials, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the use of nuclear weapons might be too drastic and would not be supported by international allies or the domestic community.
These unnamed officials also revealed that President Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping had a 45-minute phone call on September 6, but the two leaders did not reach an agreement on the way forward.
According to this source, attending the September 3 lunch with President Trump were White House Chief of Staff John Kelly, Vice President Mike Pence, Secretary of Defense James Mattis, National Security Advisor HR McMaster, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Joseph Dunford and Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats.
The president's security team then held another meeting on the issue in the White House Situation Room, joined by Secretary of State Rex Tillerson and CIA Director Mike Pompeo.
Reuters news agency (UK) on September 7 quoted the US President: "Military action is an option. Is it certain to happen? Nothing is inevitable." The White House owner added: "I still do not prioritize the military path. If we do that with North Korea, it will be a very sad day for them."
In a noteworthy development, the US multi-purpose amphibious assault ship USS Wasp, carrying a series of F-35B fighter jets, left Virginia for Sasebo (Japan) to join the US Navy's 7th Fleet. According to Sputnik (Russia), this move means that the USS Wasp has brought the most advanced US fighter jets close to the Korean Peninsula./.
