August 4, 2016 21:59

(Baonghean.vn) -While waiting for an answer from the authorities, the family with the "burned well" in Ba Nghe hamlet, Thanh Giang commune (Thanh Chuong) has removed the plastic pipe from the old well and drilled a new well.

After 4 days of existence, to monitor and examine, the "burning well" still did not have any water but only gas ignited and... curious visitors flocked to watch, at noon on August 4, the well drilling team for Mr. Nguyen Dinh Liem's family proceeded to pull the plastic pipe from the "burning well" to drop it into the second well drilled behind the house.

Mr. Liem explained: Because the “burned well” had no water, the first well drilling contract was unsuccessful, so the driller removed the plastic pipe to install another well. The second well was drilled about 20 meters away from the “burned well”, drilled 24 meters deep and encountered rocks. Although there was no fire on the well mouth, there was very little water.

The "burning well" has had its plastic pipe removed.

The well driller for Mr. Liem's family said that last year, he went to drill a well for a family in Thanh Xuan commune and also encountered a similar phenomenon. Mr. Vo Dinh Huan, the head of Ba Nghe hamlet, shared: "This is the second well in the hamlet. When it was finished drilling, there was no water but it caught fire. People heard it was strange and came to see, but they did not understand the reason why it happened, whether there was a problem with the water source here, people are very worried."

Mr. Tuong Quoc Thanh, Chairman of Thanh Giang Commune People's Committee said: "After receiving the feedback, we went to Mr. Liem's family to examine the incident and reported to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment of Thanh Chuong district. It is known that the Department of Natural Resources and Environment has also reported to the Department of Natural Resources and Environment and is responding"./.

Through research, the phenomenon of fire from drilled wells is not uncommon. Through many incidents occurring across the country, the common cause is determined to be due to drilling into methane gas pockets (chemical symbol is CH4), formed from sediments of areas that previously had many swamps, buried and decomposed flora and fauna.

Methane gas is colorless, odorless and non-toxic to human health, but some gases that come with it such as: carbon oxide (CO), hydrogen sulfide (H2S), propane (C3H8), butane (C4H10), pentane (C5H12), carbon dioxide (CO2)... are potentially toxic to humans.

Therefore, it is not advisable to continue drilling for water around areas with air pockets because if drilling through air pockets to get water for daily use, it is likely that toxic substances will seep into the groundwater, adversely affecting health.

In general, the phenomenon of a well spewing fire is not strange, it can be explained scientifically, just based on the phenomenon seen. However, to have the most accurate conclusions, there must be the participation of scientists with specific measurement parameters./.
