In the first training session in 2017, coach Nguyen Huu Thang called up 23 players. HAGL, the team currently at the bottom of the V-League with one point after four matches, is the club that contributes the most players with 9 players, including goalkeeper Le Van Truong, defender Le Van Son, Vu Van Thanh, A Hoang, midfielder Tran Huu Dong Trieu, Nguyen Van Toan, Hoang Thanh Tung, Nguyen Phong Hong Duy and striker Nguyen Cong Phuong. Nguyen Tuan Anh has not yet fully recovered from his knee injury so he cannot join his teammates in the U23 Vietnam team.
Song Lam Nghe An, where coach Huu Thang began his playing and coaching career, only had two members called up, including central defender Hoang Van Khanh and striker Ho Tuan Tai.
In the list of players called up by coach Huu Thang, there are many young players who have just joined the U19 Vietnam team to win tickets to the U20 World Cup 2017 such as Ha Duc Chinh (Da Nang), Bui Tien Dung (Quang Ninh), Nguyen Quang Hai (Hanoi)...
U23 Vietnam will gather on February 4 in Ho Chi Minh City. On February 7, coach Huu Thang and his team will play a friendly match with U23 Malaysia at Thong Nhat Stadium. This is considered a warm-up step for the U23 Vietnam team, with the U22 squad in the dual campaign of qualifying for the 2018 U23 Asian Cup and aiming to reach the final of the 29th SEA Games held in Malaysia.
