After nearly a day of traveling, this afternoon, March 31, Coach Huu Thang and his students arrived at Noi Bai airport. Although quite tired after the long journey, he always kept a bright smile, happily answering questions from the media.
“Losing to a strong team like Iraq was not unexpected. The result was not what I expected, but the players’ spirit and playing style were to my liking,” Coach Huu Thang shared.
The strategist from Nghe An has only led the Vietnamese team for two official matches, winning 4-1 against Taiwan and losing 0-1 to Iraq. Due to the short time, he “has not learned any lessons”. Coach Huu Thang will take the opportunity to visit his family for a day or two and then return to Hanoi, renting a house to facilitate his work leading the team. Next, he will travel across the country to select players.
“This time I will return to work immediately, without much rest. I will attend as many domestic matches as possible. I will attend matches with many young players such as Hanoi T&T or Hoang Anh Gia Lai. Hai Phong and Thanh Hoa will also be my destinations. I cannot say in advance which players I will use in the near future. There is still a long time, there are new players or players in good form who return that I think need to be sought to strengthen the team,” added coach Huu Thang.
The new captain of the Vietnam team also did not forget to remind the players to "forget the matches that have happened" and focus on the future. He also hopes that fans and the media will not praise the players too much to avoid them falling into illusions. The new captain of the Vietnam team was pleased when his players received a lot of praise after the big 4-1 victory over Taiwan but still kept a cool head to play their best against Iraq.
In terms of playing style, Coach Huu Thang said the players understood his intentions. However, the team has not yet achieved a different position. “This is just the beginning. There is still a lot to do,” Coach Huu Thang affirmed.
The Vietnamese team is expected to gather again at the end of May to play a friendly match with Syria, the team that just won a ticket to the final qualifying round of the 2018 World Cup - Asia region.
