At 6:00 a.m. on September 12 (Vietnam time), the Vietnam futsal team will be introduced to the world football fans by competing with the Guatemala team. On the FIFA rankings, the opponent is ranked 24th, 18 places higher than the Vietnam futsal team.
Evaluating Guatemala, head coach Bruno Garcia Formoso of the Vietnam futsal team said: “Guatemala has participated in the World Cup 4 times, so they are rated much higher than us. Besides the championship candidate Italy, the strong opponent Paraguay, so clearly, the challenge for the Vietnam futsal team is very big. Therefore, playing with 100% of their strength is not enough. The players need to try their best to hope for a positive result.”
The opening match is decisive for both teams to advance. Because a victory will ensure that the Vietnam futsal team (as well as Guatemala) at least hopes for a third-place spot for the four third-placed teams with the best results. To kick off the 2016 World Cup campaign, Guatemala also had some notable friendly matches. Most recently, they had two matches with the Egypt team with a 4-2 win in the first leg and a 2-2 draw in the second leg. Egypt was also the team that played a friendly match with the Vietnam futsal team in Ho Chi Minh City with the result that Egypt won one match with a score of 4-1 and drew 3-3 in the other match.
