A group of workers are drilling a well for Mr. Le Dinh Thanh's family in Kim Thanh hamlet, Hung Thanh commune. Well driller Nguyen Van Doan said that for nearly a month now, his team has drilled 6 wells for people in Hung Thanh commune. Because they have to drill deep and encounter hard rocks, many families have to wait a long time for their turn. |
Hung Thanh commune is the most difficult locality in Yen Thanh district in terms of domestic water and irrigation water. The commune has 8 dams, but all of them have been dry for a month, to the point that buffaloes and cows have no water to drink. The fields are dry, not a single field has been planted. The most difficult thing is that up to 60% of the drilled and dug wells in the commune have run out of water, causing thousands of people to lack water for daily use.

To ensure a reliable well water source, the drill bit must be 50-60 m deep, and it takes workers 3-4 days to complete a well. The cost of a well is about 10 million VND, of which 4 million VND is for drilling labor. Therefore, only families with good conditions invest in well drilling. |
Mr. Le Dinh Hung - Vice Chairman of Hung Thanh Commune People's Committee, said: The whole commune has more than 234 hectares of land for rice cultivation, but so far no rice has been planted, because the entire dam has run out of water. If the locality mobilizes pumps to pump water up, a small area can be planted, but the people do not agree, because the water is reserved for buffaloes and cows to drink.

There are times when the drill bit gets stuck, due to drilling into hard rock, the worker has to strain to adjust the drill bit. |
The dam is dry, meaning hundreds of dug wells and drilled wells have no water left, 60% of households have to go out to beg for water for daily use. For the past month, Hung Thanh has had more than 30 households invest in drilling new wells. Currently, there are nearly 10 well drilling rigs from other places operating, but they cannot meet the needs of the people. Because the time to drill wells is long, in the past people only needed to drill 30 - 40 m to have water, but now they have to drill 50 - 60 m to have water, so the cost is also high.

The grass for cattle grazing was planted by the people of Minh Thanh commune, but due to the prolonged drought, it dried up and burned. |
Mr. Nguyen Viet Tan, head of Son Thanh hamlet, Hung Thanh commune, said: Every year the locality experiences drought, but drought to the point where no summer-autumn rice can be grown is very rare. The family's dug well has been dry for many days now, the family will drill a well, but they have been waiting for a worker for 15 days now without their turn, because there are too many families in the hamlet drilling wells.

Ve Ran Dam, Hung Thanh Commune has been dry for nearly a month now. |
In addition, Yen Thanh also has many communes struggling to cope with drought, such as: Tien Thanh, Tay Thanh, Quang Thanh, Minh Thanh, Thinh Thanh, Ma Thanh... Of which, Tien Thanh commune is abandoning more than 200 hectares, Ma Thanh nearly 50 hectares.
According to statistics from the district's Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Yen Thanh currently has 1,500 hectares of abandoned fields, and 3,000 hectares of summer-autumn rice without irrigation water after planting. The most difficult problem is that 40-60% of households in mountainous communes are lacking water for daily life because wells are dry.

100% of the rice production land area of Hung Thanh commune is currently left fallow. |
Faced with the difficulties of the people due to drought, the District People's Committee has a policy to support the cost of drilling wells, from 3 to 5 million VND/well. At the same time, it has directed localities to mobilize people to dredge village wells. For the area of land that is currently abandoned, the district has directed localities to wait for rain to switch to growing crops for the autumn-winter crop.
