What can a beauty queen do for the country that they organize so many contests?
VeryMany beauty and model contests are held every year, costing money and time but not quality. However, after winning the above titles, what have these beauties done?
This is one of the issues raised at the Workshop "Promoting the positive aspects of beauty and model contests to contribute to promoting art, landscapes and tourism in the current context of international integration" organized by the Department of Performing Arts (Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism) on October 20, in Da Nang.
Nowadays, beauty contests, model contests, and beauty pageants have become too familiar to the Vietnamese public. The proliferation of contests makes the audience "dizzy" when seeing beauties "jumping" from one contest to another. In addition, many contestants take advantage of plastic surgery, some contestants compete "illegally"... causing the value of titles from legitimate contests to decrease...
Should the ban on cosmetic surgery be removed?
Ms. Vo Thi Xuan Trang, Principal of Jonh Robert Power, a school specializing in training beauties to compete in beauty pageants, stated: "Plastic surgery is now very popular in beauty pageants, but in beauty pageants in Vietnam, the criteria for natural beauty is always placed first and plastic surgery is not allowed. However, when Vietnamese beauties compete in international arenas, natural beauty is at a disadvantage."

Ms. Trang also said that she had witnessed a beauty queen who had plastic surgery but still made it into the top 5, so she thought that the regulations should allow plastic surgery to contestants, but to a certain extent.
Mr. Vo Viet Chung, Director of Vo Viet Chung LLC - the unit holding the copyright to organize the Miss Ocean contest in Vietnam, agrees with the above opinion, and also thinks: "Plastic surgery is very popular, so should we expand the regulations allowing plastic surgery so that beauties are not disadvantaged when competing in international arenas, and promote the image of Vietnam"?

Meanwhile, according to Mr. Le Minh Tuan, Deputy Director of the Department of Performing Arts, if all contestants are allowed to have plastic surgery, it will invisibly create a plastic surgery race to compete, thereby creating a negative effect, and at the same time losing the meaning of selecting and honoring the natural beauty of Vietnamese women.
What has the beauty queen done for the people and the country?
According to Ms. Vo Thi Xuan Trang, currently, almost all contestants compete as individuals. For example, in the Miss Universe contest, about 70% of contestants are self-funded contestants and 30% are winners of lower-level contests who are recommended. Therefore, Ms. Trang believes that the authorities need to coordinate in the process of finding contestants for the contests rather than allowing contestants to compete unilaterally, leading to poor quality, lack of training and development orientation, and when there is an incident, no organization will stand up to protect them.

The workshop received many practical contributions from event organizers and local departments. |
According to Ms. Trang, currently many candidates only focus on external beauty and do not pay attention to updating their knowledge about the country's culture, cuisine, and scenic spots, so they do not do a good job of promoting Vietnam's image to international friends.
“I have trained many beauties to compete in beauty pageants, but sometimes I have to hear questions like: What can a beauty queen do to organize so many beauty pageants? I myself really don’t know what many people have done. We should ask ourselves, what have they done for the people and the country after becoming beauty queens? From there, there should be regulations on specific tasks and actions for them during their tenure, so that they can fulfill their responsibilities,” Ms. Trang emphasized.
Meanwhile, Mr. Tran Ngoc Nhat, Deputy General Director of Hoan Vu Saigon Joint Stock Company - the copyright holder of the Miss Universe Vietnam contest, suggested that the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism should clearly regulate the participation of beauties in international beauty contests and the level of titles of these contests when they return home. Instead of many contestants participating "illegally", should the Ministry grant them permission to compete and manage them after the competition to avoid the above situation? Should the age limit for contestants be reduced?
In particular, for organizing units, there should be regulations on the current cash account level as well as experience. This will avoid the situation of many small-scale competitions being organized widely and especially avoid the situation of "buying and selling" prizes.
Through the Workshop, the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism is also seeking additional opinions for the new Decree on the organization of beauty and model contests in order to make good use of the contests to promote the image of the country and people of Vietnam.
