Nghe An: A woman was prosecuted for selling pork infected with African swine fever

The Investigation Police Agency of Nghe An Province Police has just issued a Decision to prosecute the case and prosecute Nguyen Thi Mai (born 1982), residing in Tien Phong hamlet, Van An commune, for the crime of "Violating regulations on food safety".

Accordingly, at about 9:00 a.m. on August 5, 2025, Van An Commune Police (Nghe An Province) coordinated with an interdisciplinary team under the Commune People's Committee to conduct an inspection and discovered that at Nguyen Thi Mai's house, there were acts of slaughtering livestock (pigs) in the wrong place, not ensuring slaughtering procedures, and selling pork with signs of suspected disease infection.

During the inspection, two pigs were seized, divided into many pieces of finished meat that had not been quarantined, the carcasses did not have the slaughter control mark of the competent authority, and there were signs of disease infection. The Council was established to open the seal, weigh to determine the weight, take samples for appraisal and re-seal the seized evidence, determining: The total weight of the seized finished meat was 286 kg.

During a search of the residence, authorities seized 98.5 kg of uninspected finished pork products, with no slaughter control stamp from a competent authority on the carcass, showing signs of disease infection.

Working at the Police Department, Nguyen Thi Mai confessed to all acts of slaughtering and using diseased animals (pigs infected with African swine fever), animals destroyed according to the law to process food, and selling her own food, consistent with the collected documents and evidence.

On September 17, 2025, the Investigation Police Agency of Nghe An Province Police issued a Decision to prosecute the case and prosecute Nguyen Thi Mai for the crime of "Violating food safety regulations" as prescribed in Clause 1, Article 317 of the Penal Code.

This is the first case in Nghe An province to prosecute criminals for violating food safety regulations for using pigs infected with African swine fever to sell as food in the context of the outbreak and complicated developments in the area.
