RIA Novosti news agency on January 9 quoted the opinion of political scholar Rostislav Ishchenko of the Russian Center for Systems Analysis and Forecasting that for Russia, 2016 will be a year of fierce political and diplomatic battles.

According to Mr. Ishchenko, in 2015, a “key turning point” occurred in the global opposition between Russia and the United States.

The outward manifestation of this is Russia's open intervention in the Syrian conflict, forcing the US to accept the withdrawal of its demand that Syrian President Bashar Assad immediately step down.

Russia’s military operations in Syria have exposed strategic contradictions between the United States and Türkiye that are likely to grow larger and weaken the regional influence of Washington and Ankara.

In addition, Washington's responsibility within the framework of the UN resolution proposed by Russia is contrary to the interests and actions of its allies in the Gulf region (Saudi Arabia, Qatar).

This factor also weakened the US control over the processes taking place in the region. As a result, the anti-Syrian front of the US, the European Union (EU), Türkiye and the Gulf monarchies, which had always seemed to be a solid bloc, in 2015 was divided into four parties with increasingly divergent interests. Russia welcomed the opportunity to exploit the expanded political and diplomatic space.

According to Mr. Ishchenko, the second front that the US must choose to move on, if it cannot completely withdraw from, is Ukraine.

US Vice President Joseph Biden's public statement to the Ukrainian government demanding "implementation of the Minsk Agreements" and the start of the process of federalization of the country is a serious retreat from the US policy of the past five years.

Previously, it was Mr. Biden who “raised the flag” for Kiev to launch a punitive campaign in the Donbass region. But now, Mr. Biden says that the regions of Ukraine (not just Donbass) should be granted more autonomy, even compared to what Donbass dreamed of in the spring of 2014.

In fact, on all military and political-diplomatic fronts, the US is retreating from its initial rigid demands and seeking to switch to a negotiating mode for the crises it created itself.

Washington admits that the crises have slipped out of control and that they cannot be resolved without direct negotiations with Russia./.
