At the end of the closed-door meeting, the Security Council issued a statement condemning Pyongyang's actions and announced that it would promptly issue a new resolution in response to "these dangerous and serious violations."

Speaking to reporters while reading the Security Council's presidential statement, Venezuela's permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Rafael Darío Ramírez Carreño, said the 15-member council affirmed that the nuclear test posed a clear threat to world peace and security.

The Security Council will therefore adopt a new resolution that includes "strong" measures to respond to North Korea's serious violations of its international obligations.

Members also reiterated that they had previously warned that further sanctions would be imposed if North Korea went ahead with a missile launch.

However, the Security Council also expressed its determination to continue seeking peaceful, diplomatic and political solutions to promote the denuclearization process of the Korean peninsula.

The emergency meeting of the Security Council was held at the joint request of the US, Japan and South Korea. Up to now, North Korea has always affirmed that this satellite launch is for scientific purposes, but the US, South Korea and many other countries believe that North Korea's rocket this time has technologies used for both civilian and military purposes./.
