Today, US electors vote for President

December 19, 2016 08:03

On December 19, about 538 electors across the United States will vote for President and Vice President.

The meetings of the Electoral College, held in each state and the District of Columbia, take place six weeks after the official Presidential election on November 8.

Electors are people chosen by political parties in each state to elect the President and Vice President.

The number of electors in each state is equal to the total number of senators and representatives in that state, or in other words, the number of electors depends on the population of each state.

The entire United States has 538 electoral votes, equal to the number of seats in the US Congress (535) plus 3 electors of the capital Washington.

In most states (except Maine and Nebraska), the presidential candidate who wins the most popular votes also receives all of that state's electoral votes.

On January 6, 2017, members of the Senate and House of Representatives will meet in the House of Representatives to count the votes.

Vice President Joe Biden will preside over the vote count.

Each ticket will be opened and announced in alphabetical order.

Vice President Joe Biden will announce the winner with at least 270 votes.

If there are no complaints or all complaints have been resolved, the new President will be sworn in on January 20, 2017.
