More than 21 hectares of cucumbers 'overcome' floods for high income

Mr. Phan Huy Hao - Head of Dien Chau Agricultural Extension Station said: The model was deployed from the beginning of September 2017, in Dien Loc commune with an area of ​​6.3 hectares after 10 days of sowing, storm No. 10 (September 15, 2017) hit, many young melon plants were damaged and crushed, then farmers replanted, the plants grew and developed well.

When the tree was in the flowering and first fruiting period, it was affected by storm No. 11. Heavy rain continuously flooded the entire melon growing area, the first fruit crops almost did not develop and rotted.

At this time, people who grow melons thought that the plants would not grow anymore, but cucumbers have the ability to withstand waterlogging very well, especially in loamy soil. After the water receded, people actively fertilized the plants, the melons grew healthily and bore fruit regularly.

Winter cucumbers have strong growth characteristics, many branches, high flowering and fruiting ability, smooth, long, crispy, sweet fruit. After planting 34 - 35 days, it can be harvested, the harvest period lasts for 30 - 35 days, if grown well, it can reach a yield of 50 - 60 tons/ha. This is also a valuable commodity crop, bringing high profits to people.

Mr. Cao Ba Bay - Vice Chairman of Dien Loc Commune People's Committee said: Realizing that cucumber is a commodity plant that brings high economic value, short growing time, easy to grow, in previous years because there was no stable consumption market, people were still worried about the output, but this year there is a company coming to the fields to buy products every day, so people are very secure.

This year, Dien An commune planted cucumbers for the first time, and the harvest showed high economic efficiency. Ms. Nguyen Thi Huong - agricultural extension worker of Dien An commune shared: When the model was first implemented, the people here were not bold enough to do it, but the local government paid special attention, promoted, mobilized, and persuaded the people to do it. Up to now, the model has been very successful, all the products have been purchased by a company in Bac Giang, and the people are very excited.

Realizing that cucumbers really bring high economic efficiency, Dien An commune alone plans to expand the area to 23 hectares in the whole commune and continue to sign contracts with businesses to consume the products.
